PEACE PLAYLIST WITH YOGI SARAH MCFADDEN

This week we caught up with our amazing yogi Sarah McFadden! Sarah has been practicing yoga for over 10 years and is a guru when it comes to creating dynamic and energising playlists. Get ready to get your vinyasa on!

MACACHA: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT DREW YOU IN TO YOGA?

SARAH: I came to yoga with an interest in the physical practice, as a way to keep my body strong and supple. Since spending more time with yoga over the years - both in my own practice and as a teacher - I’ve really come to appreciate the deeper and more subtle energetic effects. As well, the meditative aspects that have definitely helped me cope with anxiety and stress, it’s made me a much more easy going and relaxed person! Most days I feel a confident and happy person, so I feel very lucky to have had yoga bring these benefits to my life.

My interests and life outside of yoga include a passion for environmental and animal rights issues, and a goal to tread lightly on the earth. Aside my yoga teaching work, I have another part-time job as Operations Manager at Growing Communities. We’re an organisation trying to change the food system by bringing to life sustainable alternatives to the damaging global-supply and supermarket-dominance model. It’s exciting to show what is possible to inspire more of the world to embrace these positive changes.

MACACHA: WHAT IS YOUR GOAL AS A YOGA INSTRUCTOR?

SARAH: My goal is to inspire others in their own practice and life, whilst recognising that everyone’s journey in yoga is different and it is important to accommodate this when teaching. My motto is 'yoga for all', which means I'm committed to helping my students not only feel welcome and comfortable in my classes - whatever their level of experience, but also to discover a version of the practice and the poses that feels appropriate for them.

I put great care into planning my classes, designing sequences that help students learn more about yoga and to progress their practice whether it be on the physical, mental or spiritual level.

A key component of my classes and style of teaching is to make a vinyasa flow style of yoga accessible to a wide audience! We don't need to do ton's of Chaturanga's and Upward Dog's to enjoy a flowing practice, plus there are plenty of wonderful modifications and movement options that can be explored to replace or swap out these movements.

MACACHA: WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOVE ABOUT OUR BLENDS, AND HOW DO YOU WORK THEM INTO YOUR PRACTICE?

SARAH: I love the Macacha blends because of their careful, considered ingredient selection and sourcing. They have very high ethical and environmental standards and it's inspiring to see them making this a priority! I enjoy a Macacha Peace Blend after an evening yoga class. It keeps the calm post-savasana feeling going that little bit longer.

MACACHA: WHAT DOES MUSIC MEAN TO YOU, AND HOW DOES IT IMPACT YOUR PRACTICE?

SARAH: Listening to music brings me a lot of joy, I can feel the effects both in my body and mind. Music in your yoga practice can be a very personal thing. Sometimes, I prefer the complete quiet of a practice without any music - where the sound of my breath can provide the rhythm. And then there are times I appreciate practicing with music (usually of a gentle instrumental style), as it helps my mind stay away from distracting thoughts and can often guide me deeper into my practice. It can also be useful to cover any background noise that might be polluting my practice space.

So, here's a playlist that you can use when you feel in the mood for a little music to guide you deeper, when you might be feeling more distracted than usual, or when you want to insulate your space from the other sounds that may interfere.
