Spotlight: Maca Root

What is it?

Maca, also known as ‘Peruvian Ginseng’, is a cruciferous plant, part of the Brassicaceae family (along with things like cauliflower, broccoli & cabbages). It has been used for centuries as an energiser or ‘tonic’ food. More recently Maca has been recognised as being a powerful nutritious adaptogen; a compound that aids the body’s resistance in times of stress and fatigue, helping to balance mood.

Why we love it

Maca is rich in numerous micronutrients including Magnesium, Potassium, B vitamins and Zinc, but most notably contains more Calcium than cow’s milk.

Health benefits attributed to Maca are thought to be due to the presence of phytonutrients including macamides, glucosinolates and plant sterols. There are two types of Maca – red and white – and we have selected organic white Maca from Peru as a pivotal ingredient in our MACACHA blends for its rich tradition as a therapeutic and nutritional powerhouse.

Key benefits

In addition to its adaptogenic qualities, Maca is also shown to improve energy, stamina, sexual function, memory, and focus. By naturally balancing reproductive hormone levels it also has a long history of use in fertility.
